HKJC Selectors Play Minor Derby Discretion Card
In feature racing news from Hong Kong, racing.scmp.com reports that there were no major surprises in the HK$16 million Gr1 Derby field assembled by the Hong Kong Jockey Club's selection committee. To be run on Sunday 17 March over 2000m with 14 runners, Australian trainer John Size has two engaged in the event; they include Endowing (Danehill Dancer-Brazilian Samba, by Sadler's Wells) who provided the only interesting choice as he was selected ahead of Crackerjack, rated four points higher than him. It is the lowest rated Derby field in a while, with only Akeed Mofeed (Dubawi-Wonder Why, by Tiger Hill) having contested a Derby in another jurisdiction as a 3YO (he ran 4th of 5 in the Irish Derby). Most years have multiple previous Derby contestants in the race, held for 4YOs. Jockey Club executive director of racing Bill Nader said in a Hong Kong Jockey Club press release: "The BMW Derby is clearly two of the most exciting minutes in Hong Kong sport. This historic race has 'one-shot' charisma; it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the very best of our 4YOs and for that reason the race grabs the attention like no other. Every owner, trainer and jockey in Hong Kong wants to be able to say they did it - they won the Derby."
