Trainer David Hayes appears to have a genuine Cups contendor on his hands based on the performance at Bendigo on Saturday of imported 200,000 gns 6YO entire Jet Away (Cape Cross-Kalima, by Kahyasi). Turning for home at the rear of the field, the former Goodwood conqueror of Gr1 Melbourne Cup runner-up Fiorente let down with a barnstorming performance in the straight to win the $152,000 Bendigo Mile (1600m) by 1.3-lengths at his first Australian start. Unraced since last August when runner-up in the Gr3 Rose Of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock, Jet Away took his record to 7 wins & 5 placings from 17 starts for $224,933 earnings.
