Black Caviar Opens Up $1.04 For William Reid

Tuesday, 19th March 2013

In what is believed to be the shortest price since 1961 for a Gr1 race favourite, racing's pin-up girl Black Caviar has opened up a $1.04 favourite for Friday night's Gr1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley. According to news.com.au, that's also the shortest opening quote for her, after bagmen offered opening prices of $1.05 in her past 6 starts. With cumulative roll-over, those 6 wins would have given her backers a 34 percent return for the half-dozen victories. For those taking the proverbial "London to a brick-on", there will always be the niggling memory of Ajax's defeat at $1.02 in the 1939 Rawson Stakes.
