Clean Slate For 2013 Kentucky Derby

Thursday, 21st March 2013

For this year's Gr1 Kentucky Derby final field, reputations and 2YO awards count for little. Implemented for the first time this season, the points-based system has created a 'zero sum' level playing field for slots in the blue riband pecking order, effectively forcing connections to campaign their horses in specific feature races. With the 1st leg races – 2 remain to be run this weekend – carrying 50 points for the winner, the big guns will start to roll out for the 2nd leg Gr1 events (worth 100 points to the winner) that get underway on March 30. The 7 races that make up the 2nd leg round are the Florida Derby, UAE Derby, Louisiana Derby, Wood Memorial, Santa Anita Derby, Arkansas Derby & Blue Grass Stakes. As matters stand, D. Wayne Lukas' Will Take Charge is the current first pick for the opening leg of the US 3YO Triple Crown. The 27 horses that currently have 10 points or more are:
