Melbourne Cup Misses Out On World's Top 50 Gr1s

Thursday, 21st March 2013

The Gr1 VRC Melbourne Cup, the world's highest profile staying contest, has been overlooked for a Top 50 Gr1 position in the latest release by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA). That's against a backdrop of not one race 3000m or further making the cut, with the UK's St Leger (2920m) ranking equal 38th. Australia has 6 races (5 in Melbourne) among the Top 50: VRC Lightning Stakes (21), MVRC W.S. Cox Plate (35), VRC Patinack Farm Classic (37), VRC C.F.Orr Stakes (=42) & VRC Newmarket Handicap (=46), while the ATC's All Aged Stakes (=49) is Sydney's sole representative. The UK's Champion Stakes, won last year by Frankel, is the highest rated at 125.42, ahead of the US' Breeders' Cup Mile (123.83) & France's Arc de Triomphe (123.75). The full list can be viewed by clicking the Top 50 link in this item.
