Black Caviar Wins Gr1 William Reid Stakes
At Moonee Valley on Friday, a capacity 25,000 crowd watched recent Hall Of Fame inductee 6YO mare Black Caviar (Bel Esprit-Helsinge, by Desert Sun) stroll to an effortless 4-length victory in the $4000,000 Gr1 William Reid Stakes (1200m), winning the race for the 3rd consecutive year. Riding her hands and heels for trainer Peter Moody, jockey Luke Nolen eased up slightly over the last hundred metres after cruising to the front about 300m from home. Black Caviar defeated stable mate 4YO mare Karuta Queen (Not a Single Doubt-Card Queen, by Final Card) who led for a long way, with a further half-length back to 5YO gelding Fawkner (Reset-Dane Belltar, by Danewin). While trainer Peter Moody suggested Black Caviar would now head towards the Gr1 T.J.Smith Stakes in Sydney, there is a growing possibility of a return to Royal Ascot, where she won the Gr1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes last year despite suffering an injury.
