Fasig-Tipton Florida 2YOs: US$1.6 million Bernardini Colt

Wednesday, 27th March 2013

Triple Gr1-winning Darley shuttler & US Eclipse Award-winning stallion Bernardini (A.P.Indy-Cara Rafaela, by Quiet American) was definitely the headline act at the Fasig-Tipton Florida Sale, where he not only snared the US$1.6 million top lot but also 3 of the top 5 highest prices. Only 4 lots from the finish, Coolmore's Demi O'Byrne chimed in at US$950,000 for the colt by Bernardini from Heart of Grace (by Exploit), but this was simply the prelude to the following lot, which peaked at US$1.6 million. Also by Bernardini, this colt is from Forestry mare Hishi Aspen and sold to the bid of Steven Young (agent for Robert LaPlenta) from the draft of Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds (as Agent). In total, Bernardini averaged a whopping US$1,066,667 on his 3 lots sold. LaPlenta commented on the sale-topping colt and Bernardini's sire potential: "He's got a great shoulder and great alignment… You can apply all of the right adjectives to this colt. I was hoping he would go for less than that. I like everything about Bernardini. I have been a fan since his first crop. This colt looks a lot like Bernardini. We expected him to be the grand finale of the sale."
