SAf Gr1 Star To Be Retired After Mercury
Champion South African sprinter What A Winter (Western Winter-Waseela, by Ahonoora) is likely to be retired after The Mercury Sprint over 1200m at Clairwood on July 13, reports goldcircle.co.za. Trainer Mike Bass was not sure whether the 5YO entire, who is the highest rated racehorse in South Africa on a merit rating of 120, would run in the Gr1 Golden Horse Casino Sprint on May 25, a handicap that has not brought the best out of him in two previous attempts. What A Winter is still in Cape Town at present with African Horse Sickness travel restrictions making life tough for the trainer to move horses around. "Due to the new merit rating restrictions I wasn't able to race them either, so they just stood there twiddling their thumbs for two months," Bass revealed. What a Winter has won 12 races (including 2012's Gr1 Mercury Sprint, 2012 and 2011 Gr1 Cape Flying Championship over 1000m, Gr2 Selangor Cup, Gr2 Diadem Stakes, twice, & Listed Sophomore Sprint) & 4 placings (including the Gr1 Cape Flying Championship, Gr1 Computaform Sprint, twice, & Gr3 Cape Classic) from 22 starts.
