Florida Tracks Go To War 1

Wednesday, 3rd July 2013

The inexorable shift from on-track gaming turnover to online has two US racetracks on a war-footing. South Florida tracks Calder Racecourse and Gulfstream Park traditionally worked together, with Calder holding the summer racedays and Gulfstream utilising the winter dates to attract tourists escaping colder parts of the country, but this is set to change, reports miamiherald.com. Changing betting patterns mean that Gulfstream has decided to run summer dates in direct competition with Calder for the betting dollar. Calder trainer Bill White stated: "Racing has radically changed. It wasn't that long ago you had to support racing with live [on-track] wagering dollars. And, in the summertime, there was no one here, so it made no sense for Gulfstream to run. Now, with the majority of racing coming via Internet and simulcasting, you can run in the summer and make sense of it."
