UK Dead-Heat Judge Dismissed By BHA

Wednesday, 3rd July 2013

Following a British Horseracing Authority investigation into a controversial dead-heat in which it was compelled to amend a result, the race judge Dave Smith has had his employment terminated, reports racingpost.com. Respected UK judge, Dave Smith, took only about a minute to post a dead-heat result between even-money favourite Extra Noble & 16-1 shot Fire Fighting in a 2YO maiden at Kempton last week. Neither of the winning connections questioned the result or requested to view the photo-finish print. The issue was only brought to the governing body's attention by sceptical punters who expressed concern about the validity of the result via twitter and email. The high resolution print did indeed appear to show a margin in favour of Extra Noble with the BHA consequently announcing Extra Noble as the winner and Fire Fighting as runner-up.
