Dual Gr1 Producer Euthanased

Thursday, 4th July 2013

Yesterday's confirmation by breednet.com.au that dual Gr1 producing broodmare Kisumu (Carnegie-Shana, by Darshaan) has been euthanased after having "suffered a paddock accident in New Zealand", served to underline the capricious nature of breeding thoroughbreds. The 9YO mare, Gr2-placed in the 2007 Angus Armanasco Stakes (behind Miss Finland), was a $67,000 purchase from the 2005 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale by Trevor Delroy (Wyadup Valley Farm), and her first 2 runners were Gr1 winners. Both by legendary Cambridge Stud stallion Zabeel, Zabeelionaire took out the Gr1 South Australian Derby last year, while only last month daughter Gondokoro ran away with the Gr1 Queensland Oaks. Kisumu is survived by two daughters (both by Zabeel) and a colt who sold to Jadeskye Racing at this year's Inglis Easter Yearling Sale for $420,000. Kisumu missed last season to Zabeel.
