Just Five To Battle Out UK Gr1 Falmouth Stakes

Thursday, 11th July 2013

Only five horses remain after final declarations for the £180,000 Gr1 Falmouth Stakes (1600m) at Newmarket tomorrow. The prestigious 3YO+ event for fillies & mares has attracted a small but elite field with Gr1 winners Sky Lantern, Elusive Kate & Giofra, the promising Gr2 winner Duntle, & Gr3-winning Purr Along, confirmed as starters. Leading UK horseman John Gosden, trainer of Elusive Kate, noted that while this year's race may lack quantity, its high quality protagonists more than makes up for that. "It's the smallest and most exclusive Gr1 you can get," observed Gosden. "Sky Lantern would be the obvious favourite. She put up a stupendous performance in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and will be very much the one to beat." Gosden continued, "…we are in there with Elusive Kate and then there's a certain filly called Duntle, who won the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot, so it's a very smart field, and Giofra may well come over from France. So, we couldn't get a more elite field than that."
