10-Year-Old Stanzout In Monash

Friday, 12th July 2013

Veteran galloper Stanzout (Gallo di Ferro-Stanza Grey, by Mentat Duke) will be attempting to post his first stakes success in two years when he resumes in the $120,000 Listed John Monash Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield tomorrow. The 10YO grey gelding has not tasted black-type success since winning the Listed Wangoom Handicap at Warrnambool in May 2010. Victory on Saturday would provide Stanzout with his 3rd stakes win, after also claiming the Gr2 Gilgai Stakes in 2007. Hitherto, he has posted 9 wins & 17 placings (including the Gr1 Australia Stakes, Gr1 Lightning Stakes & the Gr3 Bletchingly Stakes – twice) for $847,107 earnings. Boasting a good fresh record (3 wins from 10 first-up attempts), Stanzout must be rated some hope in this year's Monash renewal in an 11-horse field that does not appear overly strong, with the exception of the emerging Hawkes'-trained 3YO colt Happy Valley.
