Yip First 'Native' HK Champion Trainer For 10 Years
Hong Kong trainer Dennis Yip became the first Chinese champion trainer for more than a decade when favourite Flying Elite won the final race at Happy Valley on Wednesday, reports racing.scmp.com. In a thrilling finale to the season, Jockey Club officials had to wait until the very last race before inscribing Yip's name on the Champion Trainers' trophy with he and Tony Cruz locked together on 68 wins apiece. Yip was delighted to have ended the dominance of foreign-born trainers in recent years. "I am so happy," he commented. "I was born in Hong Kong, I have lived all my life in Hong Kong and now I am a proud Hong Kong champion trainer." Yip concluded the season with 69 wins from 586 runners for HK$54,039,900 in prize money. Tony Cruz finished runner-up with 68 wins and John Size 3rd with 64 wins.
