Randwick Chairman Laments Early April Opening
In an extraordinarily frank admission, Australian Turf Club (ATC) chairman John Cornish has told dailytelegraph.com.au that the Club "shouldn't have opened for the autumn carnival". Acknowledging that despite the grandstand only having been half completed at the time, Cornish revealed, "We needed the money, and we wanted to hold the traditional races at their traditional home. People were starving for racing in the eastern suburbs. Had Randwick been a shopping centre, and I've built plenty of them, you wouldn't have opened it half finished." Randwick's $150 million renovations will officially be completed this week, a full three weeks ahead of schedule, and the track's capacity will be boosted from 23,000 to 52,000.
