Cup Hero Subzero On The Mend

Thursday, 18th July 2013

Melbourne Cup winner Subzero (Kala Dancer-Wiley Trade, by To Market) is reportedly responding well to treatment after a health scare on Monday. The 25YO is back home recuperating at owner Graham Salisbury's property at Heathcote in Victoria after being treated for renal (kidney) insufficiency at the University of Melbourne's Veterinary Clinic earlier in the week. The much-loved grey had suffered weight loss and stopped eating, prompting Salisbury to seek specialist medical help. Salisbury stated that Subzero's condition was still being investigated. Since retiring in 1994, Subzero has served as a clerk of the course at Flemington racecourse and more recently has been involved in Racing Victoria's Community Education in Schools program, starring in the 'Subzero Goes To School' program where he visits primary schools to promote the racing industry. In a career spanning 48 starts, 'Subbie' won 6 races including the 1992 Gr1 South Australian Derby & Gr1 Adelaide Cup for $1,951,180 in prize money. Subzero became part of Melbourne Cup folklore when winning the 1992 Cup on a rain soaked Flemington track defeating Veandercross and Castletown.
