"No Fairytale" For Piggott Jr

Friday, 19th July 2013

Jamie Piggott, the 19YO son of legendary UK jockey Lester Piggott, made his professional riding debut at Killarney in Ireland overnight, after being entrusted with riding 6YO gelding Pivotal Rock for trainer Tommy Stack in the Killarney Grand Live Music Venue Handicap (1700m) for 4YOs+. However, Pivotal Rock faded in the closing stages to finish 7th in the 13 horse field, reports dailymail.co.uk. Piggott Jnr is based with Stack at County Tipperary and has also spent time riding trackwork for Ballydoyle. But following in the footsteps of a famous parent is always a daunting task, and in racing there is no greater challenge for a young jockey than trying to emulate the deeds of Lester Piggott. Piggott's name is synonymous with thoroughbred riding excellence. He was crowned champion British jockey on 11 occasions and won over 5,000 races including 9 derbies among 30 classics, including memorable victories aboard the likes of Nijinsky, Roberto & his personal favourite Sir Ivor. Post race Jamie Piggott commented, "It was a good experience, the horse is good and honest but needed that bit extra today ... I completed my A-levels in maths and three sciences before giving riding a go. I've only been riding properly for eight months. I've been riding out in Tommy Stack's and have been there full-time since before the winter – hopefully I can make a career of being a jockey now."
