Big Brown Adds Irish Gr3 Win

Monday, 22nd July 2013

At The Curragh in Ireland, Vinery's Kentucky Derby winning shuttler Big Brown (Boundary-Mien, by Nureyev) added a group success when exciting 3YO colt Darwin (Big Brown-Cool Ghoul, by Silver Ghost) scored by 1.75-lengths for trainer Aidan O'Brien in the €63,000 Gr3 Minstrel Stakes (7 furlongs) for 3YOs+, over 5YO gelding Gordon Lord Byron (Byron-Boa Estrela, by Intikhab) & fellow 3YO colt Leitir Mor (Holy Roman Emperor-Christinas Letter, by Galileo). Darwin is a US import that cost US$1.3 million at the Fasig-Tipton Florida 2YO Sale in March 2012. He had won a Belmont Park maiden on debut last October but was then injured when fourth in the G2 Nashua Stakes at Aqueduct. O'Brien commented that Darwin's next assignment is likely to be in France. "He came to us with a massive reputation... he's got a great cruising speed and he gets a mile well," O'Brien stated. "There are several options and we may go to Deauville now." Darwin has now won 3 of his 4 starts for €91,176 earnings. He is Big Brown's fourth first-crop stakes winner. Big Brown will stand at Vinery this upcoming breeding season for $22,000.
