New Champion SAf Hoop Wins Int Jockey Challenge
South African jockey Piere Strydom has beaten some of the world's finest riders to win the fifth annual International Jockeys' Challenge at Veliefendi racecourse in Istanbul, Turkey, reports sportingpost.co.za. Strydom was a member of a 5-man international team that competed against Turkey's best local hoops for €22,000 in prize money. The visiting team included Frankie Dettori, Japan's Yutaka Take, US-based Venezuelan Javier Castellano, and Frenchman Stephane Pasquier, while the local stars consisted of Halis Karatas, Selim Kaya, Ahmet Celik, Gokhan Kocakaya and Ozcan Yildirim. Strydom finished on thirty points to collect the winner's cheque of €8,000, beating local hero Halis Karatas with Stephane Pasquier claiming third. Strydom has returned to South Africa where he will be crowned champion jockey in two weeks time.
