Romanee Conti Dies Age 24

Tuesday, 23rd July 2013

Pencarrow Stud's outstanding broodmare Romanee Conti (Sir Tristram-Richebourg, by Vice Regal) passed away last Friday at the age of 24, reports NZ Racing Desk. A daughter of the great Sir Tristram, Romnee Conti overcame leg issues to make an international impact during her time on the track and again at stud where she left Melbourne Cup winning mare Ethereal (Rhythm-Romanee Conti, by Sir Tristram). Trained by Sheila Laxon, Ethereal also won the Gr1 Caulfield Cup, Gr1 The BMW & Gr1 Queensland Oaks during a stellar career. Romanee Conti, herself a half-sister to the dam of multiple Gr1 winner and sire Darci Brahma and recently retired stakes winning freshman sire Burgundy, was a multiple group winner in NZ, Australia & Hong Kong. "It was a combination of old age and the knees getting to her in the end and she had difficulty getting up and down," explained studmaster Leon Casey. "We'll never have another one to win a Hong Kong Cup and then produce a Caulfield and Melbourne Cup and BMW winner – she was truly unique."
