SAf Gr1 July-Winning Hoop In Dominant Form
South African jockey S'manga Khumalo continues to impress after becoming the first indigenous South African jockey to win the country's most famous race, the Gr1 Durban July. Last Saturday, the twenty-eight year old rode 5 winners on the 9-race card at Turffontein followed by another 4 winners the very next day at Ngong, Kenya, reports bdlive.co.za. Khumalo's feats in the saddle this season, particularly his historic Durban July milestone, have prompted calls from some prominent members of the racing industry for the talented hoop to be nominated for Sportsman Of The Year. South Africa's leading trainer Mike De Kock is one such fan, commenting in his blog, "S'Manga should be recognised and promoted as one of South Africa's top sportsmen, with sponsorship packages to match the kind of celebrity that goes along with... the Durban July [feat]." De Kock also urged Khumalo to go for the National Jockeys Title next season, stating he would have his support.
