Zayat Stables Principal "Rubbishes" California Synthetic Surface

Thursday, 25th July 2013

Ahmed Zayat, one of America's top racehorse owners, has yet again criticised Del Mar's Polytrack surface, reports utsandiego.com. Six years after his well-documented quarrel with Del Mar Thoroughbred Club president and CEO Joe Harper that led to Zayat removing 25 of his horses, the leviathan owner has derided the synthetic track as "glorified plastic" that "neither horses nor jockeys like." Zayat believes Del Mar is uncomfortable for horses. "You find horses running awkward and not comfortable," explained Zayat, before continuing: "It's a poor surface to train on. It creates health issues. I'm not a fan of artificial surfaces because the beauty of a thoroughbred is the majestic way they move." However, despite his feelings of enmity, Zayat continues to campaign his horses at the Californian track because of his admiration for trainer Bob Baffert. "Bob Baffert is somebody I respect, love, and I cannot endorse enough," he stated.
