Better Than Ever Officially Retired

Friday, 26th July 2013

Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis has announced the retirement of top-class international galloper Better Than Ever (French Deputy-Songfest, by Unbridled's Song), reports NZ Racing Desk. The 5YO was a star of Singapore racing for many years winning 4 Gr1 titles (the Kranji Mile – twice, the Raffles Cup & Singapore Guineas) & claiming Champion 3YO & 4YO honours after winning his first 12 races for trainer Laurie Laxon. Transferred to New Zealand horseman Jason Bridgman following a bleeding attack in May last year, Better Than Ever was placed at Gr1 level on two occasions and went out on a winning note with a resounding victory in the Gr2 Awapuni Gold Cup (2000m) on March 30. "The wear and tear of racing at the elite level has seen him at a point now where there is a high risk of injury and given the risk factor it was decided, in the best interests of the horse, to retire him," explained Bridgman. "He is happy and sound, but it is saddening that we see the end to the career of this terrific horse."
