Randwick Could Become New Sydney Night Racing Venue
Sydney's Canterbury racecourse, currently the venue for night racing in the NSW capital city, has had its annual quota of night meetings cut in half for the new racing season, reports dailytelegraph.com.au. Scheduled to conduct just five meetings under lights in 2013-14, the Canterbury cutbacks have been implemented due to combined small crowds and low betting turnover. ATC chief executive Darren Pearce intimated that newly refurbished Randwick could provide a solution and twilight meetings (which have been successful in the past) will be trialled, noting: "We have held summer twilights at Randwick previously and they have performed a bit better in terms of crowd numbers and atmosphere than a Canterbury night meeting... The reality is that Randwick is more likely to attract Christmas and summer 'party' crowds than Canterbury, so the club is going back there this summer and we will make an assessment from there." The move will be augmented by the planned extension of Sydney's light rail to include the Moore Park (close to Randwick) precinct.
