Tuesday, 30th July 2013

At Monmouth Park in the US yesterday morning (Australian time), Vinery shuttler More Than Ready (Southern Halo-Woodmans Girl, by Woodman) added a Gr1 triumph when exciting 3YO colt Verrazano (More Than Ready-Enchanted Rock, by Giant's Causeway) scored by a dazzling 9.75-lengths for trainer Todd Pletcher in the US$1 million Gr1 Haskell Invitational Stakes (8.5 furlongs) for 3YOs, over fellow colts Powerbroker (Pulpit-Shop Again, by Wild Again) & Micromanage (Madaglia d'Oro-Catnip, by Flying Paster). Gr1 Preakness winner Oxbow was fourth. With the Gr1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga on August 24 shaping as his next target, Verrazano took his record to 5 wins (also including the Gr1 Wood Memorial Stakes, last start's Gr2 Pegasus Stakes & Gr2 Tampa Bay Derby) from 6 starts, with his only failure coming in the Gr1 Kentucky Derby on a slop track. Thus far, his 5 wins have been by an aggregate 38.75-lengths.
