Toronado Wins UK Gr1 Sussex Stakes

Thursday, 1st August 2013

At Goodwood in the UK overnight, dual Derby-winning shuttler & 6-time Gr1 victor High Chaparral (Sadler's Wells-Kasora, by Darshaan) added a Gr1 triumph when outstanding 3YO colt Toronado (High Chaparral-Wana Doo, by Grand Slam) scored an impressive last-to-first 0.5-length win for trainer Richard Hannon in the £300,000 Gr1 Sussex Stakes (8 furlongs) for 3YO+, over fellow 3YO colt Dawn Approach (New Approach-Hymn of the Dawn, by Phone Trick) & 4YO entire Declaration Of War (War Front-Tempo West, by Rahy). Toronado's first Gr1 success was due in large part to a brilliant display of horsemanship by jockey Richard Hughes, who waited patiently in rear before unleashing his charge's devastating turn of foot to reel in Dawn Approach. Toronado took his record to 5 wins (including the Gr2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster & the Gr3 Craven Stakes at Newmarket) & a placing (the Gr1 St James's Palace Stakes) from 7 starts.
