All Eyes On Bayrir In Listed Winter Challenge

Friday, 2nd August 2013

Meanwhile, the Chris Waller-trained import Bayrir (Medicean-Balankiya, by Darshaan) has added an element of intrigue to the $80,000 Listed Winter Challenge (1500m) at Rosehill tomorrow. The French-bred galloper, who will be having his first Australian outing, is a three-time stakes winner in his native France and also boasts a Gr1 victory in the US. The 5YO, which was last seen finishing 6th to Red Cadeaux in the Gr1 Hong Kong Vase in December, clearly has a class edge on his rivals and will prove a formidable foe if Waller has him primed for a first-up assault. Last-start Listed Winter Stakes winner Under The Sun, who has been in brilliant form this preparation with 2 wins from 5 starts, is favourite for the race but one suspects he will need to produce his best to topple the talented European. Formerly in the stable of French master Alain de Royer-Dupre, Bayrir has always been held in high regard by his connections as evidenced by his participation in last year's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. None of tomorrow's rivals can hold a candle to such credentials.
