Aust Stud Book Welcomes New Season

Friday, 2nd August 2013

The Keeper of the Australian Stud Book, Michael Ford, has welcomed breeders to the new season which commenced yesterday, 1 August. He reminded breeders that any foal born before 1 August 2013, whose dam was covered from 1 September 2012, is eligible for inclusion in the 2013 foal crop even if it was born in July. For 2013 coverings, foals can only be accepted for the 2014 season if their dams were covered from 1 September 2013 and not before. This rule was introduced in 2001 to reduce the number of inadvertent out-of-season foals. Each season, there are usually about 50 foals born in late July which are eligible to be included in the 1 August foal crop. Ford commented that there were plenty of reasons to be excited about the new season. "A new season is always full of promise of good things to come, and this year even more so with Black Caviar going to stud, a new grandstand at Royal Randwick, racecourse improvements in most states, and the excitement of the next 14 weeks leading to the Melbourne Cup clash between overseas marauders and local heroes."
