Lomitas-Son Wins SAf Sire Premiership
Maine Chance Farms stallion Silvano (Lomitas-Spirit of Eagles, by Beau's Eagle) has been crowned champion sire in South Africa for 2012-13, reports bloodstock.racingpost.com. The German-bred son of Lomitas sired five Gr1 winners during the season, including Durban July hero Heavy Metal, who scored on the same weekend that his son Lucky Speed landed the Deutsches Derby (German Derby) at Hamburg. Silvano is also the sire of arguably the most exciting horse in South Africa, the 4YO entire Vercingetorix (Silvano-National Vixen, by National Assembly). The Mike de Kock-trained Vercingetorix is undefeated in 4 careers starts after winning the Gr1 Daily News 2000 Stakes at Greyville. Silvano won 7 of his 14 starts including three Gr1s, namely the Gr1 Singapore International Cup, Gr1 Hong Kong Queen Elizabeth II Cup and the Gr1 Arlington Million. Retiring at the end of 2001, Silvano stood for two seasons at his owner Andreas Jacobs' Gestut Farhof in Germany before relocating to Jacobs' Maine Chance Farms in South Africa's Cape Province. He returned to Germany for one season in 2009 during which time he sired Lucky Speed.
