Racing Fans Question Wisdom Of Dan's Race Entries
Mort Fink, the breeder and owner of US Horse Of The Year Wise Dan (Wiseman's Ferry-Lisa Danielle, by Wolf Power) says he is amused when he reads stories online criticising his management of the horse, reports drf.com. Racing fans have utilised social media to express their collective disapproval of Wise Dan's racing campaign, with a central thread being that connections are avoiding the best races, such as the Breeders' Cup Classic which is run on dirt. If Wise Dan is a great horse, they argue, he should take on great challenges. Indeed the criticism seemed to start when Fink and trainer Charlie LoPresti bypassed the Classic to run in the Breeders' Cup Mile on turf, and it continued when, after two Gr1 wins earlier this season, Wise Dan dropped back in grade for the Gr2 Firecracker Handicap, a race that fans contend is beneath a Horse of the Year. The deeply conservative Fink simply ignores such criticism: "No one is going to sway what I think. I laugh like crazy when I read they think we're taking advantage by running in a Gr2 race." Fink, an 83 year-old retired businessman who says he doesn't believe in taking gambles, admits LoPresti has pressed him to consider a run in this year's Classic. Wise Dan will run next in Saturday's Gr2 Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga.
