Female Jockey Dies In Darwin Race Fall

A tragic race fall during yesterday's Darwin Cup meeting has resulted in the death of popular jockey Simone Montgomerie, reports the age.com.au. Montgomerie was "thrown from her mount Riahgrand when she was was coming down the home straight in the sixth race of the day." Despite being treated at the scene by two doctors, young mother Montgomerie passed away shortly after arriving at Darwin Hospital. Her father is trainer Peter Montgomerie, trainer of On A Jeune who finished 2nd in the 2005 Gr1 Melbourne Cup. The remainder of the meeting was cancelled, including the feature Darwin Cup, and Northern Territory Stewards have commenced "a full investigation into the circumstances of the accident."
