HTBA Welcomes New Biosecurity Policy For Horses

Tuesday, 6th August 2013

NSW's Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders Association has expressed support for the announcement made by Federal Agriculture Minister the Hon Joel Fitzgibbon, for a new simplified process of transporting horses to and from Australia, in time for the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival. A new "streamlined quarantine process, based on sound science, advice from international scientific experts and peer-reviewed", will provide a two week quarantine period which allows owners and trainers to transport "fit, healthy, disease free horses." HTBA president Dr Cameron Collins stated: "The new rules are based on scientific evidence and use increased testing of horses to decrease the time they are required to spend in quarantine after arrival in Australia. These changes will streamline the requirements for the importation of horses for competition and breeding purposes and support the multi-billion dollar Australian Thoroughbred industry."
