Caulfield Cup Favourites Go AWOL As Suspected
In a lamentable, but expected move, connections of the 2013 Gr1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) pre-post favourites It's A Dundeel & Puissance de Lune have elected to bypass the traditional lead-up form event for the Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m). According to news.com.au, It's A Dundeel's major Spring focus will be the Gr1 Cox Plate (2020m) at Moonee Valley, while Puissance de Lune's trainer Darren Weir will also use the Cox Plate as the final prep race for his star stayer. An interesting statistic to emerge from yesterday's Caulfield Cup noms (down 40 on 2012) was the increase of international runners: of the aggregate 173 horses entered, 78 are from the Northern Hemisphere. Lloyd Williams and Gai Waterhouse headed the entries with 14 apiece.
