DTC Donates $200k Cup Purse To Montgomerie Family Appeal
Darwin Turf Club (DTC) has, in an unprecedented move, donated the $200,000 prizemoney of the 2013 Darwin Cup, cancelled following the tragic death of leading local jockey Simone Montgomerie in an earlier race on Monday, to an appeal set up to assist her family. That amount has been complemented by $50,000 from each of the Northern Territory government and Carlton & United Breweries. Meanwhile, according to theaustralian.com.au, DTC chairman Brett Dixon noted, "We're offering intensive and ongoing counselling for jockeys, trainers, staff and members of the public who witnessed the distressing fall." Local Stewards are assisting WorkSafe investigators looking into what caused the fatal fall.
