Further Fall For US Foal Numbers
THE Jockey Club of North America is forecasting another fall in foal numbers for 2014, and has revised crop figures for 2012 and 2013, reports bloodstock.racingpost.com. Next year's North American foal crop is predicted to be 22,000 (a decline of 4 per from 2013) with figures for 2012 and 2013 adjusted to 23,500 and 23,000 respectively. The original projection was 24,700 foals for both those years. The global financial crisis is largely attributed to the dramatic decline. In 2009, the North American foal crop was 32,304 compared to 23,500 in 2012 and 2013 - a 27 per cent drop. Other major racing countries have experienced similar falls with Britain declining 22 per cent between 2009 & 2012 and Ireland by 26 per cent for the same period.
