Caulfield Cup Target For Pakal

Tuesday, 20th August 2013

The OTI Racing team have announced that they intend to target the $2.5 million Caulfield Cup with German-bred import Pakal following his highly impressive victory at Caulfield on Saturday, reports horseracing.com.au. The Mick Price-trained 5YO, who was having just his second outing on Australian soil, showed a tremendous turn of foot when bounding clear in the straight to win by 6-lengths. The performance was a pleasant surprise for OTI principals Simon O'Donnell and Terry Henderson who thought the gelding needed the hit-out. "He has been a pretty good horse and in the class that he was in had he been fit we would have expected him to run really well," said Henderson. "Given that Mick (Price) thought he needed the run we were absolutely stoked by what happened on Saturday." Henderson added that the Gr3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on September 21 could be the best lead-up race for Pakal given its exemption status. "It is tempting to go to the Naturalism because it is an exemption race for the Caulfield Cup and you can protect your weight," explained Henderson. Pakal, the winner of 4 of 16 starts, is a Gr3 winner of the Bavarian Stakes in his native Germany as well as a runner-up in the Gr1 Criterium International at Saint-Cloud in France.
