France's Kergaly A Solid Melbourne Cup Pointer

Tuesday, 20th August 2013

Meanwhile, French Gr2 staying event the Prix Kergaly (3010m) is becoming a key pointer for Melbourne Cup aspirants, reports racingvictoria.net.au. With both winners Americain and Dunaden coming through the event en-route to Cup stardom, attention has turned to last weekend's Kergaly winner Verema (Barathea-Vermentina, by Darshaan). The race's full report is later in this column. Trained by Alain de Royer Dupre, the Aga Khan-bred & owned mare  sprinted home strongly over the closing stages in a slowly run race, leaving connections to seriously consider a Melbourne sojourn. "She has the potential to be a Gr1 [mare] and she may race abroad in the future," revealed Georges Rimaud, racing manager for the Aga Khan. "We wanted to see how she performed today but Australia is possible and she is progressing with every run."
