It's On: Al Kazeem vs Toronado

Wednesday, 21st August 2013

Outstanding colt Toronado has been confirmed as a definite starter in tonight's Juddmonte International (10 furlongs) at York setting up an intriguing clash with fellow Gr1 galloper Al Kazeem, reports theguardian.com. Toronado (High Chaparral-Wana Doo, by Grand Slam), last-start conqueror of Dawn Approach in the Gr1 Sussex Stakes over a mile, will have his stamina tested against a top class rival already proven over the journey. "If he doesn't stay the mile and a quarter, that's fine, we won't know until we try," commented assistant trainer Richard Hannon Jnr. "But he'll have two months to get over it before the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and there's not a lot for him in between." Hannon Jnr pointed out that the Qatari Sheikh Joaan, who owns Toronado, also owns Choisir colt Olympic Glory and that the pair may clash if kept to a mile. "Olympic Glory looks a definite miler," Hannon Jnr continued, "whereas this fella might get more, so we'll have a go." Three-time Gr1 winner Al Kazeem (Dubawi-Kazeem, by Darshaan) is bidding to make history as the first horse to win the Prince Of Wales, the Eclipse and the International in the same season.
