Venus To Tackle Older Mares At York

Wednesday, 21st August 2013

Irish filly Venus de Milo (Duke of Marmalade-Inchmahome, by Galileo) will bid to give trainer Aidan O'Brien his third Gr1 Yorkshire Oaks (12 furlongs) on Thursday, reports racingpost.com. The 3YO daughter of Ballydoyle's former champion galloper Duke Of Marmalade has been in marvellous form this season, following up her fine 2nd to Chicquita in the Irish Oaks with a very impressive win in the Gr3 Give Thanks Stakes at Cork. O'Brien admitted that the decision to run Venus de Milo against the older mares was not originally on her agenda. "The original plan was to give her a break and go to the Prix Vermeille," explained O'Brien. "But after the Curragh she thrived and really went the right way. She is in good form and we decided we would let her take her chance… It's a step up against the older fillies." The master horseman's previous Yorkshire Oaks victories were in 2006 and 2007 with Alexandrova and Peeping Fawn. Hoping to thwart O'Brien will be a top quality line-up of fillies and mares including The Fugue, Wild Coco, Riposte, Shirocco Star & Secret Gesture.
