Mic Mac To Give Hawkesbury Gold Cup A Shake

Thursday, 22nd August 2013

Trainer Paul Messara has opted to run in form galloper Mic Mac (Statue of Liberty-Amandine, by Tertian) at Hawkesbury today rather than in the weight-for-age Warwick Stakes at Warwick Farm. Mic Mac, who has proven most consistent this preparation with one stakes victory (Listed Civic Stakes) & 2 stakes-placings (Listed Winter Stakes & Gr3 Missile Stakes), will contest the $150,000 Gr3 Panthers Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) this afternoon. The 8YO gelding is yet to win over a mile, but Messara believes the race is a better option than tackling the Gr2 feature at Warwick Farm which has attracted a top class field including Metal Bender, Foreteller, Beaten Up, Glencadam Gold, Veyron, Toydini, Streama & Rain Affair, who defeated Mic Mac by 5-lengths last-start in the Missile Stakes. Opposing Mic Mac in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup will be a quality group of horses including Julienas, Cantonese, Prince Of Capers & the Grant Allard-trained Loaded, which has been somewhat of a revelation this campaign winning his past three races including the last-start Listed Tatt's Mile at Doomben. Perhaps the toughest for Mic Mac to beat will be Gai Waterhouse's Irish-bred import Julienas, with whom Mic Mac shares top weight of 59kg.
