New Zealand Raises Minimum Stakes For 'Iconic' Meetings

Friday, 23rd August 2013

Across the Tasman, New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) has announced prize money increases effective from January 1st 2014 following extensive consultation with race clubs and key stakeholder groups. New Zealand's five premier race meetings, which have been retitled 'Iconic' meetings, will have minimum prize money increased to NZ$40,000 per race. Other minimum prize money increases will take effect across a range of meetings and events, including all Gr2 races which will rise from NZ$85,000 to NZ$100,000. Matthew Goodson, Chairman of the NZTR Board, commented, "Since 2011…we have put in place a programme to consistently and sustainably increase prize money each year." Mr Goodson added, "It is the NZTR Board's long-term goal to deliver a sustainable lift in prize money each season, while carefully investing in future growth. Based on expected growth in the Racing Board's distributions…a further uplift is likely in FY15." The 'iconic' race meetings are:

  • Wellington Cup Day at Trentham on 25 January 2014
  • New Zealand Derby Day at Ellerslie on March 1st 2014
  • Hawke's Bay Spring Classic Day at Hastings in October 2014
  • New Zealand Cup Day at Riccarton Park in November 2014
  • Boxing Day Races at Ellerslie on December 26th 2014
