Star German Sire Lando Dies

Friday, 23rd August 2013

Lando (Acatenango-Laurea, by Sharpman), one of the best German gallopers of recent times, has died aged 23, reports bloodstock.racingpost.com. The son of Acatenango, who won 10 of his 28 starts and over £2 million prize money, was euthanized after suffering a spiral fracture in one of his legs. Tragically for his connections, this occurred when Lando tried to stand following a successful operation for severe colic. His owners Manfred Ostermann and Janet Leve-Ostermann, of Gestut Hof Ittlingen Stud in Germany, said in a statement: "He was the best horse we have bred on our farm. He was always an outstanding horse with an impeccable physique, a great interior, pride, fighting spirit and toughness." Lando was a 7-time Gr1 winner (including the Deutsches Derby & Premio del Jockey Club) who signed off his racing career in style with victory in the 1995 Japan Cup. Among the 14 Gr1 winners he sired at stud were Lockinge Stakes winner Farhh, Donaldson, Epalo, Gonbarda, Intendant, Paolini, Prince Flori & Scalo.
