Aga Khan Targets Melbourne Cup

Wednesday, 28th August 2013

In a major coup for Racing Victoria (RV), the Aga Khan-owned mare Verema (Barathea-Vermentina, by Darshaan) will start in this year's $6.2 million Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 5. The 4YO will be the first-ever Melbourne Cup runner for His Highness the Aga Khan, who is one of the world's most prodigious and successful thoroughbred breeders and owners. The progressive Verema is trained by French master Alain de Royer Dupre, the man who prepared 2010 Melbourne Cup winner, and now Swettenham Stud stallion, Americain. Verema is the winner of 4 of 12 starts including the last-start Gr2 Prix de Kergorlay (3000m) at Deauville, the same race that Americain won before embarking on his first Australian sojourn. RVs international recruitment officer Leigh Jordan praised the Aga Khan's decision to campaign Verema at this year's spring carnival, saying it was a further endorsement of the race's growing international prestige. "His Highness the Aga Khan is one of the most influential owners and breeders in the world, so we are delighted that he has decided to send his first runner to Australia for this year's Emirates Melbourne Cup," said Mr Jordan.
