Gold Cup Could Be Next For Travers Hero
Trainer D. Wayne Lukas says he is keeping his options open for Travers Stakes hero Will Take Charge but is favouring the US$1 million Gr1 Jockey Gold Cup as his next assignment, reports bloodhorse.com. The Jockey Gold Cup, which would pit Will Take Charge against older rivals, is scheduled for Belmont Park on September on 28. The other alternative is the US$1 million Gr1 Pennsylvania Derby, against his own age group, at Parx a week earlier. Lukas says both options have their advantages but is attracted to the prestige of the Jockey Gold Cup. "One of them is a Gr1 and very prestigious. If you were to win the Jockey Club, you'd go damn sure to the head of the division," Lukas said. "If you stay in your division, the million dollars is not necessarily bad, either. We'll weigh all the things. You get an extra week if you go to the Jockey Club, so that's also something." Will Take Charge gave the 77YO Lukas his third Travers victory and first since 1995 when defeating Moreno by a nose.
