Jolie An A-List Contender

Thursday, 29th August 2013

The Hawkes training triumvirate has labelled talented mare Jolie Bay (Fastnet Rock-Legally Bay, by Snippets) as a "serious Gr1 horse" ahead of her return to racing this weekend, reports horseracing.com.au. The Gr2 Roman Consul Stakes winner will open her spring campaign in the Gr3 TheShark.com.au (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday after an extended period on the sidelines convalescing from a mystery injury. Earlier this year Jolie Bay pulled up lame during trackwork but when vets inspected her they were unable to identify the cause. Erring on the side of caution, team Hawkes spelled her immediately and bypassed the autumn to give the lightly raced 4YO plenty of time to recuperate. Jolie Bay's untapped ability was on show when she was runner-up to Nechita in the Gr1 VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes last November, and trainer Wayne Hawkes is confident she can take the next step this preparation. "We are hoping that she gets back to her best but we won't know until we race her," Hawkes said. "She is a serious Gr1 horse, she hasn't won a Gr1 but she is a fair dinkum Gr1 horse and hopefully we can get her back in order." Jolie Bay is a daughter of Fastnet Rock and Gr3 Sweet Embrace winner Legally Bay & has hitherto won 2 of her 5 starts for $235,030 earnings.
