Makfi To Be Influenced By Weather

Thursday, 29th August 2013

Saturday's Makfi Challenge Stakes at Hastings, New Zealand's first Gr1 race of the season, may be significantly influenced by the weather, reports NZ Racing Desk. The Makfi has attracted some of the country's best weight-for-age gallopers but the prospect of a heavy track may stymie the chances of many. Among a host of top quality horses are the John Bary-trained duo No Excuse Maggie and Survived. Bary has no concerns about No Excuse Maggie on a wet track but is unsure how exciting 4YO Survived will fare. "Realistically, if we get no rain from now until Saturday then the track can get back to a Slow 9, but if there's a shower it will be straight back to a Heavy 10," Bary said. "She [No Excuse Maggie] is proven on it and is match fit and that will be the theme of the day – anything that's fit will go well right across the board. Survived, winner of the Gr3 Manawatu Classic & Gr3 Hawke's Bay Gold Cup last season, has not raced since campaigning in Queensland during the winter but Bary says he is happy with his condition. "He's gone on dead tracks and is a young horse who is naturally fit," he said. "I'm confident I've got enough work into him and it's just whether he can make up ground with his big finish on a heavy track."
