Another Chapter In Paynter Miracle Comeback
The remarkable story of miracle US galloper Paynter (Awesome Again-Tizso, by Cee's Tizzy) continues this weekend when the 4YO lines up in the US$750,000 Gr1 Woodward Stakes (9 furlongs) at Saratoga, reports horseracingnation.com. Paynter's saga began in July last year after his win in the Gr1 Haskell Invitational. Shortly thereafter, the son of Awesome Again suffered a severe colic attack followed by laminitis in three of his four hooves. Somehow, he survived both life-threatening conditions but his weight had dropped to less than 1,000 pounds. It was only after he was operated on to remove a part of his intestines last December that his health started to return. Paynter resumed in June this year, winning by 4.5-lengths and recording a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 114. Six weeks later he failed narrowly in the Gr2 San Diego Handicap behind Kettle Corn but trainer Bob Baffert knew he was back to his best. "It's an incredible story," said Baffert. "It was so emotional, what he went through for two months. Now that he's back, I really want him to take on the big guys, because he's a big guy himself." Baffert confirmed he is pointing Paynter toward the Breeders' Cup and is expecting a big show on Saturday. "We're excited about running him. It's a tough field, but he's tough."
