Tuesday, 3rd September 2013

Racing Victoria (RV) and the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) have announced nominations for the $6.2 million Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) to be run at Flemington on November 5. Among the 135 nominees are past winners Green Moon (2012) and French galloper Dunaden (2011), the latter who is one of 28 international-trained horses nominated for the race (five more than were entered last year). Some of the more high-profile internationals entered include the Michael Owen-owned Brown Panther, the Luca Cumani-trained Mount Athos, Australian-owned American St Leger winner Dandino, 2011 runner-up Red Cadeaux & the Irish-bred Gr1 winner Joshua Tree. Godolphin, who are yet to taste Melbourne Cup success, have four entries, namely Ahzeemah, Colour Vision, Royal Empire & Songcraft. This year represents the 20th Anniversary of the first foreign winner of the Cup when the Dermot Weld-trained Irish galloper Vintage Crop stormed to victory in 1993.
