Champion US Filly Beholder Resumes Victorious

Tuesday, 3rd September 2013

At Del Mar in the US, last year's champion 2YO filly Beholder (Henny Hughes-Leslie's Lady, by Tricky Creek) resumed off a 4-month break to score an easy 2.75-lengths win for Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella in the US$100,000 Torrey Pine Stakes (8 furlongs) for 3YO fillies, over fellow fillies Wittgenstein (Shamardal-La Vita E Bella, by Definite Article) & Charlie Em (Kheleyf-Miss Meggy, by Pivotal). Beholder, winner of last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies & this year's Gr1 Las Virgenes Stakes & Santa Anita Oaks, had not been sighted since her 2nd-placed effort behind Princess Of Sylmar in the Kentucky Oaks in May. This latest success boosted her record to 6 wins from 10 starts for US$1,825,000 earnings. Mandella, who trains Beholder for B. Wayne Hughes' Spendthrift Farm, told drf.com that the half-sister to Gr1 Hollywood Futurity winner Into Mischief (Harlan's Holiday) would have her next start in the Gr1 Zenyatta Stakes at Santa Anita on September 28, and all going well would push on towards the Breeders' Cup Distaff on November 1st. "That's what we're looking at," he said.
