Caulfield Cup Weights Released

Thursday, 5th September 2013

Meanwhile, the weights for the $2.5 million Gr1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield on October 19 were released by Racing Victoria. Stimulating plenty of dialogue among racing enthusiasts is the weight that has been allocated to last year's Australian Cup winner Super Cool (Fastnet Rock-Queen Mother, by Kingmambo), who is current pre-post favourite for the race. The Mark Kavanagh-trained 4YO gelding resumed with a slashing third to superstar mare Atlantic Jewel in last weekend's Memsie Stakes and appears spot-on target for the world's richest mile-and-a-half handicap. Super Cool, who has been assigned an impost of 55kg, will be bidding to become just the fifth horse in the last 20 years to carry a weight of more than 54.5kg to victory in the Caulfield Cup, the others being Dunaden (58kg, 2012), Viewed (57kg, 2009), Northerly (58kg, 2002) and Sky Heights, who set a modern day record for a 4YO when lumping 56.5kg to victory in 1999. RV Executive General Manager of Racing, Greg Carpenter, explained that Super Cool's Australian Cup success was the major contributing factor in the weight assigned to him. "Super Cool was the first 3YO since Saintly to win the Australian Cup and is one of only three to do so," said Carpenter. "Saintly was allotted 55.5kg in the Caulfield Cup as a 4YO but did not run, instead winning the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup." Last year's Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon has been allocated top weight of 58kg. For the full list of weights click on the race name in this item.
